2. This study finds turmeric extract selectively and safely killing cancer stem cells in a way that chemo and radiation can not.

A groundbreaking new study published in the journal Anticancer Research reveals that one of the world’s most extensively researched and promising natural compounds for cancer treatment: the primary polyphenol in the ancient spice turmeric known as curcumin, has the ability to selectively target cancer stem cells, which are at the root of cancer malignancy, while having little to no toxicity on normal stem cells, which are essential for tissue regeneration and longevity.

Titled, “Curcumin and Cancer Stem Cells:  Curcumin Has Asymmetrical Effects on Cancer and Normal Stem Cells,” the study describes the wide range of molecular mechanisms presently identified by which curcumin attacks cancer stem cells (CSCs), which are the minority subpopulation of self-renewing cells within a tumor colony. These cells  are capable of producing all the other cells within a tumor, making them the most lethal, tumoriogenic of all cells within most, if not all, cancers.

Because CSCs are resistant to chemotherapy, radiation, and may even be provoked towards increased invasiveness with surgery, they are widely believed to be responsible for tumor recurrence and the dismal failure of conventional treatment.

The study identified the following 8 molecular mechanisms by which curcumin targets and kills cancer stem cells:

  • Down-regulation of interleukin-6 (IL-6): IL-6 is classified as a cytokine (a potent biomolecule released by the immune system) and modulates both immunity and inflammation. It’s over expression has been linked to the progression from inflammation to cancer. Curcumin inhibits IL-6 release, which in turn prevents CSC stimulation.
  • Down-regulation of interleukin-8 (IL-8): IL-8, another cytokine, is released after tumor cell death, subsequently stimulating CSCs to regrow the tumor and resist chemotherapy. Curcumin both inhibits IL-8 production directly and indirectly.
  • Down-regulation of interleukin-1 (IL-1): IL-1, a family of cytokines, are involved in response to injury and infection, with IL-1 ? playing a key role in cancer cell growth and the stimulation of CSCs. Curcumin inhibits IL-1 both directly and indirectly.
  • Decrease CXCR1 and CXCR2 binding: CXCR1 and CXCR2 are proteins expressed on cells, including CSCs, which respond to the aforementioned cytokines in a deleterious manner. Curcumin has been found to not only block cytokine release, but their binding to these two cellular targets.
  • Modulation of the Wnt signaling pathway: The Wnt signaling pathway regulates a wide range of processes during embryonic development, but are also dsyregulated in cancer. Curcumin has been found to have a corrective action on Wnt signaling.
  • Modulation of the Notch Pathway: The Notch signaling pathway, also involved in embryogenesis, plays a key role in regulating cell differentiation, proliferation and programmed cell death (apoptosis), as well as the functioning of normal stem cells. Aberrant Notch signaling has been implicated in a wide range of cancers. Curcumin has been found to suppress tumor cells along the Notch pathway.
  • Modulation of the Hedgehog Pathways: Another pathway involved in embryogenesis, the Hedgehog pathway also regulates normal stem cell activity. Abnormal functioning of this pathway is implicated in a wide range of cancers and in the stimulation of CSCs and associated increases in tumor recurrence after conventional treatment. Curcumin has been found to inhibit the Hedgehog pathway through a number of different mechanisms.
  • Modulation of the FAK/AKT/FOXo3A Pathway: This pathway plays a key role in regulating normal stem cells, with aberrant signaling stimulating CSCs, resulting once again in tumor recurrence and resistance to chemotherapy. Curcumin has been found in multiple studies to destroy CSCs through inhibiting this pathway.

As you can see through these eight actions, curcumin exhibits a rather profound level of complexity, modulating numerous molecular pathways simultaneously.

Conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy is incapable of such delicate and “intelligent” behavior, as it preferentially targets fast-replicating cells by damaging their DNA , regardless of whether they are benign, healthy or cancerous cells. This includes fast replicating cells such as the stomach lining which are essential for us to digest food to gain nutrition for healing!  Curcumin’s selective cytotoxicity targets the cancer stem cells.

Curcumin and Normal Stem Cells

Normal stem cells (NSCs) are essential for health because they are responsible for differentiating into normal cells that are needed to replace damaged or sick ones. If curcumin were to kill normal cells, like radiation and chemotherapy, it would not provide a compelling alternative to these treatments.  The study addressed this point:

“The safety of curcumin has been long established, as it has been used for centuries as a dietary spice. The question arises as to why curcumin does not seem to have the same deleterious effects on normal stem cells (NSCs) as it does on CSCs. There are several possible reasons that curcumin has toxic effects on CSCs, while sparing NSCs.”
The study offered three potential explanations for curcumin’s differential or selective cytotoxicity:
  • Malignant cells take in much more curcumin than normal cells. This is similar to properties of Paw Paw Cell Reg  (Asimina triloba), as explained in Benoit’s book, “The Paw Paw Program“.
  • Curcumin alters the microenvironment of cells in such a way that is adverse to CSCs and beneficial to NSCs.
  • Curcumin may not only directly attack CSCs, but may encourage them to differentiate into non-lethal, more benign cells.

Concluding Remarks

This study adds growing support to the idea that safe, time-tested, natural substances are superior to synthetic ones. Given the evidence that a safe and effective alternative may already exist, chemotherapy, radiation and even surgery may no longer be justified as the first-line standard of care for cancer treatment.

In fact, a significant body of evidence now implicates these treatments in worsening prognosis, and in some cases driving cancer stem cell enrichment in tumors.

Radiotherapy, for instance, has been found to induce cancer stem cell-like properties in breast cancer cells, essentially increasing their malignancy and tumoriogenicity by 30 fold.  This is hardly progress when one considers the role that CSCs play, especially in contributing to post-treatment secondary cancers.

Turmeric and its components are not FDA approved drugs, and by definition the FDA will not allow an unapproved substance, natural or synthetic, to prevent, treat, diagnosis or cure a disease.  This means that you will not be seeing it offered by an oncologist as an alternative to chemotherapy or radiation any time soon.  This does not, however, mean that it does not work.

Success with Uterine, Colon and Liver Cancer

September 2013 Eloise developed a severe stomach ache. Many appointments  finally resulted in an operation on the small colon. In the process, a growth was discovered in the uterus, which turned out to be malignant cancer.

A complete hysterectomy was done, to be followed up with chemo. Before starting chemo the oncologist wanted a pet scan, and this uncovered a mass in the large intestine: a different cancer resulting in the removal of 3 feet of colon.

We commenced with chemo, but it resulted in side effects that hospitalized Eloise for nine days. The surgeon and oncologist argued over whether the side effects were the result of the two surgeries or the chemo. The oncologist however, resumed a lesser chemo schedule every three weeks for five months. At the end of the chemo a CT scan revealed no new tumors.

After six months had passed a new scan revealed a growth on the liver. Another surgery that resulted in 15% of the liver being removed. The liver surgeon also discovered tumours on the peritoneum, which he removed, and found to be metastatic cancer.

The oncologist now declared Eloise to be stage four terminal. His prognosis now was to extend life as much as possible with nothing more definitive. Eloise was scheduled for chemo every week for 26 weeks. After three weeks she was again hospitalized for four days and then sent to a skilled nursing facility for two weeks for recovery. Near the end of her stay she met with the oncologist and said no more chemo – I choose death.

She had weighed 150 pounds in September 2013 and now weighed only 97 pounds. The oncologist now declared her remaining life span to be from two months to less than a year. He urged us three different times to go home and contact hospice. This was January 15, fifteen months after we first learned Eloise had cancer.

The next day I was on the Internet searching alternative cancer treatments. I spent several eight hour days learning about Paw Paw trials at Purdue University, Wayne State University, and Ford Cancer Clinic Screening and Treatment Centre of Nevada. These were conducted primarily by by Dr. McLaughlin, with assistance from  Dr. James Forsythe and other researchers. I sent for your book, The Paw Paw Program.

Success with Stage 4 Colon Cancer

Update. Just thought you like you know I had an ultrasound of my abdominal area about a month ago. All was clear except for the tumors I knew were on my liver. But good news there.  All were calcified or partially calcified. No active cancer!

I had a chest xray too because I had been coughing severally for at least 2 months so concern for spots on the lungs. But no pneumonia or spots! All clear! Such great news!

I do believe the Paw Paw had something to do with the calcified tumors on my liver! I would take the Protease Plus first on empty stomach then later after a meal, the Paw Paw.. I also used most of the supplements suggested in your book, The Paw Paw Program  as well as healthy diet. Vegetarian mostly. No dairy or sugar, processed foods.Organic as much as possible..I believe healthy eating is very important to fighting and killing cancer cells. I am hoping the tumors will continue to shrink and completely die on my liver.

Q&A Paw Paw for my Cat?

My 1 1/2 ye old cat was just diagnosed with tumors around her heart. She has gone down hill very quickly in the past 2 days. I am scheduling surgery hopefully this week for their removal. I have read great things about Paw Paw for cancer in humans. Is it safe to treat my cat with it and if so how much would administer daily for a 5lb cat? I have suffered great loss through death in 2016 in my family and losing “Monkey” is more than I can bear. I hope you can help with providing your opinion on this matter. Time is of the essence as I am sure it is with everyone asking for your time. I thank you in advance for consideration.

Sorry to hear about your cat, which is obviously very dear to you.  Yes, we have used Paw Paw successfully to extend life in pets. For animals, just as with humans, the chemo therapeutic effect of Paw Paw is self-regulating. For 5 lbs.  (that’s a small cat!) you could start with 1/4 of a capsule of Paw Paw Cell Reg, and repeat 4 times per day. If any nausea presents, then decrease this dosage. If no problem after the first day, then increase by 1/4 capsule per day. Any nausea indicates you have reached the tolerance dosage, so you would decrease to at the previous dose. Pancreatic Cancer growth halted

Dear Lorene!

I have good news about my mom. The mass in her pancreas has not enlarged since it was found last year. And mom said that  her pain in the sides has significantly decreased. Because of mom’s condition nothing more invasive than CT can be done to diagnose more precisely the condition of the mass. Mom has been using Paw Paw since November 2015, she is using 12 pills a day. Her question is  if she should keep using 12  a day or if she can reduce the dosage. I really appreciate your support and advice about it.

Thank you to both of you for sharing these results. It can help others. This is excellent news in 10 months! It is probably in her favor that the doctors do not want to do anything more invasive – if nothing is broken, don’t fix it!
One CT scan per year is acceptable, more than that is excess radiation. 
If she is feeling well, she may choose to continue at the same dosage of Paw Paw, to not only stop growth, but to start to decrease the mass. The beauty of the chemotherapeutic effect of Paw Paw, Asimina triloba, is that it is self regulating in dosage. Should your Mom start to feel any nausea, cramping or continual diarrhea, THEN she can decrease by 1 per day. This would indicate she is needing a lower dose.

This story has just been shared from another practitioner, who uses the same basic Paw Paw Program as in my book,  including the extra nutritional shake recipes in book and on this website.
I am not saying 100 capsules per day are usually necessary, especially if taking NSP nutritious shakes, but for obviously “terminal” cancer, a real commitment to live is required.

It is up to the body, the person, the mind, and probably more that science will never understand to overcome a disease. We all eventually die, but life extension and quality of life while living are always improved by providing nutrition as one of the first tools. And the sooner the better.
